12 Common Bios Beep Sound, What They Mean and Possible Solution

When the computer encounters an error during startup which prevents it from booting normally as expected; Some short beeps are sounded by the BIOS to give the users some hint regarding the actual component or components such as memory, cache, motherboard or processor that have failed. So, as an enginner that fixes computers, always pay close attention to the beep sounds.

The following are some bios beep codes and what they mean:

1 Single Beep - Refresh Failure

When you encounter 1 single beep, it means to Reseat, replace or clean memory, In most cases you will need to troubleshoot the motherboard.

2 Beeps - Parity Error

When you encounter 4 beep, it means to Reseat, replace or clean memory, In most cases you will need to troubleshoot the motherboard.

3 Beeps - Memory Error (first 64KB)

When you encounter 3 beeps, it means to Reseat, replace or clean memory.

4 Beeps - Timer Failure

When you encounter 4 beeps, it means to troubleshoot the motherboard.

5 Beeps - Processor Failure

When you encounter 5 beeps, you are required to Troubleshoot the CPU and motherboard.

6 Beeps - Keyboard Controller Failure

When you encounter 6 beeps, replace the keyboard ot in most cases the motherboard.

7 Beeps - Virtual Mode Exception Error

When you encounter 7 beeps, Troubleshoot CPU, motherboard.

8 Beeps - Display Memory Failure

When you encounter 8 beeps, it could that the Display Memory have failed hence Trouleshoot the graphics card and motherboard.

9 Beeps - ROM BIOS Checksum Failure

When you encounter 9 beeps, it could that the ROM Bios have failed, first, remove the CMOS Battery and start the computer without the CMOS Battery. Replace the ROM BIOS,  troubleshoot motherboard.

10 Beeps - CMOS Shutdown Register Failure

When you encounter 9 beeps, remove the CMOS Battery and start the computer without the CMOS Battery. Replace the ROM BIOS,  troubleshoot motherboard.

11 Beeps - L2 Cache Failure

11 Beeps hardly happens but if you encounter it, Troubleshoot L2 cache and motherboard.

Continuous Beeps - Memory or Video Failure

If the beep sound is infinity, Troubleshoot the memory, graphics card and motherboard.
